What's changed in Vinyolo, newest first. Most of it comes from members telling us something was wrong — which remains the fastest way to get something fixed.
A wizard that walks beside your cellar — and a demo you build yourself
Vinyolo now has a guided mode. New accounts start in it; everyone else can open it from any cellar page. It doesn't explain the app — it does real things in your real cellar, one small lesson at a time, with the page you're working on beside it.
Cellar Wizard, one tap from anywhere
The round button bottom-left opens to Cellar Wizard, AI Pairing and Feedback; the map has a Wizard button too. On a tablet or computer your cellar stays on the right at full size and the wizard sits on the left, walking alongside. Lessons: set up racks, fridges and cases; put a bottle in a slot — or three, six, a case; watch a case arrive and the shared pool fill it with scores and a price; move things; drink one; find a bottle three ways; what it's worth; what's for dinner. Each takes a couple of minutes and everything you do is real. Exit Wizard lands you on the page you were looking at.
On a phone: the setup half
The wizard runs on a phone as a plain conversation — storage, bottles, cases — which is what you want standing in the cellar. The lessons that work on the live map and table need a tablet or a computer; a proper phone version of those is next.
Tell it what else it should do
The last item on the wizard's menu is a box: what would you want it to do? It comes straight to me, and the next lessons are built from what you send.
The map now says what it's drawing
A small legend beside the map controls shows the three bottle sizes — 375ml, 750ml, 1.5L — in the colours used for white, red and sparkling. Checking it turned up two real faults, both fixed: a sparkling white drew gold under a blue header, and on a phone a half-bottle drew larger than a full one.
Fridges by model
Type the make — EuroCave, Liebherr, NewAir, Vinotemp and about forty models — and the shelves are set up for you. Adjust the count if yours differs.
Two demos now
Explore a full cellar, as before — or build your own, step by step, in an empty one. The second starts with a sample 450-bottle cellar you can import in one click and then runs the same lessons you'd get with an account.
The Waiting lot is in arrival order
When you drop a bottle onto an occupied slot, the one you displaced goes to the Waiting lot — and it now goes to the end, after everything that was already waiting. It used to be ordered by when the bottle first joined your cellar, which looked random and made a just-displaced bottle hard to find.
Bringing in a cellar
Whether it's a CellarTracker export or a spreadsheet, the wizard asks which and takes you to the right importer. Racks that arrive as rows-and-slots stay rows-and-slots.
Smaller things
Signing up suggests a username from your name and checks it's free as you type. The Update Wine form opens again (it had stopped, with a 'Could not load form' message — sorry). Multi-update can look up scores and a price for a batch of selected bottles, checking the shared pool first. The dark cellar map's small text is readable again, and the light pages are a shade warmer so the two sit together.
On prices, a follow-up
Last time I said the retail price runs above Wine-Searcher's lowest listing. I spent an evening trying to make the lookup find that lower tier as well, and it did — but every 'low' it found was a 3-litre bottle at a storewide sale, a half-bottle, a magnum filed as a 750, or a single consignment bottle. So the number stays what it is: one real offer from a named shop, dated. If one looks wrong to you, tell me which bottle.
Your prices now come with a date and a shop attached
Market prices used to be gathered by a browser extension while someone was reading a wine page. They're now looked up directly, and every price carries where it came from and when. Most cellars are worth a little more than they were last week — here's why, and what it does and doesn't mean.
Prices are looked up, not collected
Vinyolo now searches for a current retail price for each wine and writes it into every cellar holding that bottle. One lookup covers everyone who owns the wine, so the prices keep improving as the shared pool fills, and a new member arrives to a cellar that already has numbers in it.
What the number actually is
A real advertised price for a standard 750ml bottle, from a named merchant, on a known date. It is not the cheapest price in the world — a determined shopper on Wine-Searcher will usually beat it, sometimes by a good margin. It's closer to what you'd pay at a shop that turns up when you go looking. We'd rather tell you that than let you assume it's a floor.
Why your valuation moved
The old prices came off Wine-Searcher listing pages, and some of them were quietly wrong — a half-bottle listing stored as though it were a full one, a pre-arrival price from an importer selling below market. Those are gone. Most cellars land 10–15% higher as a result. Bottles we couldn't find a current price for are left blank rather than guessed at, and Cellar Valuation still counts them separately instead of calling them zero.
Bottle photos are shared, if you want them to be
Photograph a bottle and you can offer that photo to anyone else holding the same wine — and see theirs on your own bottles where you haven't taken one. The checkbox on each upload is ticked by default and you can untick it; if you'd rather never share, there's a single switch on your profile that turns it off for everything, past and future. Photos are credited to whoever took them.
The Score Collector extension has been retired
The Chrome extension that gathered scores while you browsed wine sites has been switched off. The lookup above replaces it and does the job without asking you to install anything or visit a page first. If you have the extension installed it will simply stop finding things — you can remove it whenever you like.
What is your cellar worth? Now you can ask it — and then ask better questions
Cellar Valuation totals what your bottles are worth at market price, then lets you take that number apart: by readiness, varietal, region, type and location. Click any line and the table shows exactly those bottles.
Cellar Valuation
Select any bottles — a shelf, a region, your whole cellar — and Power Tools → Cellar Valuation totals them at current market price. Prices are held per 750ml, so a magnum counts double and a half-bottle counts half. Bottles with no market price yet are excluded and counted separately rather than quietly treated as zero: a total that skips a third of your cellar still looks like an answer, and you'd believe it.
Then take the number apart
Details breaks the total down five ways — readiness to drink, varietal, type, region and storage location — each with its share of the value. Every line is clickable: tap Bordeaux and the table shows your Bordeaux, valued. Open Details again and it splits that by locker. Keep going as deep as you like; a back bar walks you up a level at a time.
Where the market prices come from — your choice
A bottle counts toward the total once it has a price against it, and there are three ways to get one there. Type it in yourself — for one bottle, or for a whole selection at once in a single table. Take it from the shared pool, where prices other members have already collected fill your blanks free and instantly. Or install the Score Collector, which reads prices as you browse and is the quickest route for a large cellar. The extension is optional: nothing here is gated behind it, and a price you type in is yours — the pool only fills bottles that have none.
Selecting bottles now says what it will do
A bar above your cellar with both choices written out: select everything on this page, or everything matching your current filter. Selecting past the first page used to be a double-click on the header checkbox that nothing on screen mentioned — and on a phone, where there is no header checkbox, it wasn't possible at all. Filter to a region, select all of it, value it: that now works on a phone.
The readiness view is the one that surprised us
It answers a question that's hard to ask any other way: how much of what I own is ready to drink, how much is still too young, and how much has quietly gone past its window. In money, not just bottle counts.
Imports no longer mangle accented names
Côte-Rôtie was arriving as C?te-R?tie and Rosé as Ros?, irreversibly, when an export was saved in a Windows encoding. Fixed. Separately, spreadsheets whose first column is an internal ID could land that ID in the wine name and leave the real name unmapped. Also fixed — if either bit you, re-import and it will come in clean.
The LWIN linker suggests wines that actually match
When a bottle needed identifying, the suggested matches were often nowhere near — eight wines sharing one word with yours, all scored identically. It now uses the same matcher as the search box, which is the one that worked all along.
Collecting prices in bulk, at your pace
Updating scores and prices for a batch of wines now opens one window that waits for you: Save & Next, Discard, or Stop. Nothing advances on a timer, so you can look at the page before anything is saved. Plus 496 new wines in the reference database this week.
Paid plans are paused, and Pro is free for the rest of the beta
Vinyolo is still in beta, so it shouldn't be taking anyone's money yet. Nothing is for sale until 12 November — and Pro is yours free in the meantime, for the asking.
Nobody can be charged until 12 November
Checkout is switched off on the web and in both apps. This isn't just a greyed-out button: the server refuses the charge, so an old link or a stale tab can't put a payment through either.
Beta Pro — 12 months, free, no card
Ask for it on the pricing page and it's active immediately: unlimited cellar, unlimited scans, everything Pro does, for a full year. When the year is up you drop to the free plan and keep every bottle. Viewing, editing and CSV export work on every plan, always.
Founding Testers keep what they were promised
The first 50 testers from WineBerserkers keep their badge and their permanent 50% renewal rate — $49/yr instead of $99, for as long as they stay. Beta Pro is the year of Pro without those two things.
The 1,000-bottle cap is still suspended
Unchanged, and running to the same date. Import your whole cellar — nothing imported during the window is ever hidden or removed afterwards.
CellarTracker import, and a week of fixes from beta reports
The first week of testing turned up three faults. All are fixed, and one of them was much bigger than it looked.
Import your cellar from CellarTracker, storage layout included
A guided importer that reads your Location and Bin and rebuilds your real storage layout — including bin names like R3-14 that pack a row and a slot into one field. Bottles parked under labels like Sold or Consumed come in as history rather than occupying a phantom bin, and you confirm which of your labels mean that. Everything is shown for review before a single row is written.
Re-import as often as you like without duplicating anything
Every bottle carries its CellarTracker ID, so a second import updates what's already there. Buy a case, re-export, re-import — you get the new bottles and nothing else.
Keep up to four columns we don't otherwise support
Anything in your export holding real data with no home in Vinyolo is offered as a keepable column, under the name CellarTracker gave it.
A new Imported view in the cellar table
A fifth button beside Basic, Vineyard, Scores and Location, showing what an import brought in that the others don't — purchase price, currency, store, dates, notes and the rest. It only appears once you actually have some of it.
Feed a CellarTracker file to the ordinary CSV importer and it now redirects you
It recognises the file, carries it across to the right importer so you don't pick it twice, and lets you overrule it if it's wrong.
Label scanning from photos works again
Reported as an iPhone problem, it turned out an expired key had quietly taken down every AI feature — label scanning, pairing suggestions and taste profiles — for some time. Fixed the same day. Photos from any phone now work, including HEIC files and pictures taken sideways.
Scores kept behind a subscription are no longer collected
Where a critic score is shown to non-subscribers only as a teaser, we now skip it rather than guess. A locked panel could previously bleed a neighbouring critic's number into the wrong field; that's fixed and the affected entries were purged.
Call your storage what you actually call it
If you keep wine in lockers, shelves and boxes rather than sites, rows and slots, rename the four levels in your profile and the new names follow you everywhere.
One Enrich button that explains itself
It fills from the shared pool first, free and instant. If the pool has nothing, it offers to check Wine-Searcher and waits for you to say yes. No silent lookups.
